Lab and Diagnostic Services are an important part of patient care. EMR / EHR Systems, Hospital information systems would typically need to interface (communicate with) internal Lab and Diagnostic service departments, and/or external Lab facilities and Diagnostic / Imaging centers. Reports must then be available to referring physicians and other providers electronically, directly to/from varying EMRs and in some / HIS systems and in some cases via the Internet to physicians working remotely.

  • interface with existing EMR / HIS systems for patient identification / medical record number (MRN) and billing information when submitting orders to lab systems. Should be able to interface and receive lab orders using HL7 order transactions from different EMRs/HIS.
  • handle several types of orders electronically, e.g. General lab tests, Microbiology orders, Blood Bank Orders, Pathology orders, Blood Gas orders, DermPath tests, Molecular tests, Cytogenetics orders
  • provide customization of requisitions for each type of order that is sent providing separate requisitions available for different types of lab orders, e.g., general lab versus DermPath requests.
  • provide pre-printed lab labels for blood work and/or other types of specimens collected in the office
  • provide for ABN checking, with notifications to the user that the test is subject to an ABN check based on both diagnosis and frequency.
  • provide a custom list of tests to physicians based on individual specialty of practice
  • where required forward surveillance data required to public health agencies (microbiology data, other reportable diseases, tumor registry data and other significant findings)

RADIOLOGY INTEGRATION

  • enable physicians to enter orders from EMR / HIS or via a Web page and send those orders directly to Diagnostic Services systems (RIS/PACS systems)
  • interface with existing EMR / HIS systems for patient identification / medical record number (MRN) and billing information when interfacing and receiving diagnostic services orders.
  • specify orders for different modalities and procedures, e.g. General radiology tests, Nuclear Medicine tests, MRIs, CT Scans
  • provide reports electronically with ability to view diagnostic images with DICOM viewers
